The Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, was a beehive of activities as budding table tennis talents converged for the maiden edition of the KG Under-10 and Under-15 Table Tennis Championship.
The tournament, which attracted young players from various clubs and academies, provided a platform for the participants to showcase their skills, determination and passion for the sport as they battled one another for supremacy in the Under-10 and Under-15 boys’ categories.
Parents, coaches, sports enthusiasts and stakeholders were on hand to witness the thrilling encounters as the young paddlers displayed remarkable talent, agility and sportsmanship throughout the competition. The atmosphere inside the arena was electrifying, with spectators cheering the players during every intense rally and exciting point.
Speaking at the event, the organiser of the event and Coach of the Junior National team, Coach Ganiyu Kadiri, stated that the championship was initiated to discover and nurture young talents while promoting grassroots sports development in Nigeria.
He noted that investing in youth sports remains one of the most effective ways of building future champions and encouraging positive engagement among children.
According to him, the tournament is expected to become an annual event aimed at providing regular competitive opportunities for young table tennis players and helping them gain the exposure needed to advance their careers.
Several coaches commended the organisers for creating a platform dedicated to age-grade competition, stressing that such initiatives would contribute immensely to the growth of table tennis in the country.
The competition featured a series of exciting matches, with participants demonstrating exceptional techniques and impressive composure despite their young age. Some of the players emerged as standout performers, earning admiration from spectators and officials alike.
One of the Parents of the participants, Rakesh Kumar, also expressed appreciation to the organiser for providing a safe and competitive environment for the children to develop their talents, build confidence and interact with their peers.
He continued, “I’m so excited to be part of the programme. It’s quite interesting and encouraging for the young table tennis players, and I hope they achieve their aims and objectives”. He concluded.
While the championship drew to a close, winners and outstanding performers were rewarded with medals, trophies and other prizes, bringing smiles to the faces of the young athletes.
