The iconic National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, came alive with excitement, energy and breathtaking displays of talent as hundreds of skaters and fans from different parts of Nigeria converged for the much-anticipated Skate Lagos 3.0 Tournament, a grassroots sporting event designed to promote skateboarding culture and youth development.

The tournament, which attracted participants, sports enthusiasts, families, corporate partners and stakeholders from across the country, transformed the historic sporting arena into a hub of entertainment and healthy competition as skaters showcased exceptional skills, creativity and daring stunts.

Organised by Sporty Lagos Naija, Skate Lagos 3.0 featured several competition categories, including freestyle skating and skate jumping. street skating challenges and trick contests, with participants battling for honours and a share of the impressive N2 million cash prize pool.

The event, sponsored by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through the office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports, Mr Adebanji Atewogboye, witnessed fierce competition among both emerging and experienced skaters, who thrilled spectators with spectacular performances, earning loud cheers from the enthusiastic crowd that filled the venue throughout the day.

Speaking during the tournament, the organisers described the event as a platform aimed at empowering young people, promoting sportsmanship, and creating opportunities for talented youths to pursue professional careers in skating and other sports.

According to Atewogboye, Skate Lagos has continued to grow since its inception, attracting increasing participation and support from stakeholders who recognise the sport’s potential as a tool for youth engagement, social inclusion and economic empowerment.

“We are excited by the tremendous turnout and the level of talent on display. Our objective is not just to organise a competition but to build a community where young people can express themselves positively, discover opportunities and develop their skills,” one of the organisers stated.

One of the participants expressed appreciation to the sponsors and organisers for creating an avenue where skaters can compete, network and gain exposure.

One of the winners, who emerged victorious after an impressive performance, described the tournament as a life-changing experience and encouraged more youths to embrace sports as a pathway to personal development and success.

The competition climaxed with the presentation of medals, trophies and cash prizes to outstanding performers, with winners carting home various sums from the N2 million prize fund.
