…Ikosi-Isheri LCDA empowers residents through digital literacy training
In a bold move to bridge the digital divide and empower the less privileged, the Executive Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mayoress Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, has successfully empowered over 100 indigent youths through a free Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Skill Acquisition Programme.
The initiative, which was part of the local government’s youth-focused empowerment drive, targeted unemployed and underprivileged youths across the various wards of the LCDA, offering them 3 months practical training in essential computer skills to prepare them for the demands of a fast-evolving digital world.
Speaking during the official closing and certification ceremony held at the Council Secretariat, Yeye-shewa of Ijanikin reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through education and skills acquisition noting that in an era where technology dictates the pace of global development, no youth should be left behind due to lack of opportunity.
“This administration recognizes the importance of equipping our youths with the necessary skills to thrive in the 21st-century economy. By empowering these young men and women with ICT knowledge, we are opening doors of opportunity, enhancing self-reliance, and preparing them for gainful employment or entrepreneurship,” she stated.
The programme, which ran for 3 months, featured hands-on training in key areas such as computer appreciation, Microsoft Office packages, digital literacy, Java Script, Web design, internet usage, and introduction to graphic design. The curriculum was designed to be beginner-friendly yet impactful, catering specifically to participants who has keen interest in computers.
Participants expressed gratitude to the council boss, describing the programme as a life-changing experience.
A beneficiary, Miss Olojede Ifedayo Helen, who had been longing to for such opportunity prior to the training, shared her excitement about gaining skills she could use to pursue further education or even secure an internship.
“This is the first time I’ve had the chance to learn about computers. Now I know what Data Analysis is all about. I am truly grateful to Mayoress Bada for this rare opportunity,” she said.
Another participant, Miss. Mistura Famuyotan, noted that the training had boosted her confidence and sparked her interest in furthering a career in tech. She called on other political leaders to emulate the example set by the Ikosi-Isheri Mayoress Hon. Bada.
Officials from the ICT unit of the LCDA, alongside professional facilitators, served as instructors throughout the duration of the programme, ensuring high-quality training and individual attention to all participants. At the end of the training, each graduate was issued a certificate of participation, with plans underway to place some of them in internships or further advanced ICT programmes.
Community stakeholders, parents, and local leaders lauded the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. They also commended the Mayoress for her consistent efforts to uplift the youths of Ikosi-Isheri.
As the nation continues to push for youth inclusion in innovation and technology, initiatives like this by local governments are seen as critical building blocks in national development.
Mayoress Bada pledged to sustain the programme in subsequent quarters, promising an even wider scope and greater participation.
