…council mourns the passing of a dedicated administrator
Somolu Local Government has been thrown into mourning following the death of its Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Mr. Dele Samson Afolabi, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday, July 24, 2025.
Mr. Afolabi, a seasoned public administrator and grassroots politician, was reportedly confirmed dead after a brief illness that had kept him away from public functions in recent days. His passing has been described as a monumental loss to the Somolu community and the All Progressives Congress (APC) family in Lagos State.
In an official statement issued by the Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul-Hammed Salawu (Dullar), the council expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of the SLG, highlighting his immense contributions to governance, public service, and community development.
“We are devastated by the news of the death of our dear Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Dele Afolabi. He was not just a colleague but a brother and a reliable engine room of this administration. His passion for the development of Somolu was evident in every project he supervised,” the Chairman said.
Until his death, Mr. Afolabi served diligently as the administrative backbone of the council, overseeing internal policies, coordinating departmental functions, and ensuring seamless implementation of council resolutions. He was particularly instrumental in various empowerment programs, infrastructural monitoring, and youth-related initiatives.
Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, community stakeholders, youth groups, and religious institutions. The former Sole Administrator of the council, Hon. Williams Bamidele Lawanson, in a condolence message, described Mr. Afolabi as “a loyal party man who served with humility and dedication.”
Residents of Somolu also expressed shock and grief, recounting his simplicity, accessibility, and relentless commitment to the betterment of the local government.
Meanwhile, the council’s flag has been lowered to half-mast in honor of the late SLG, and a condolence register has been opened at the council secretariat.
Plans for his burial rites has been formally announced by the family. However, sources say the council will be actively involved in ensuring he receives a befitting farewell, given his pivotal role in the administration.
As Somolu mourns the passing of Dele Afolabi, many are left to remember him as a silent achiever, a bridge-builder, and a man whose legacy of service will continue to resonate across the community he so passionately served.
