Eid-el-Fitri celebration: Somolu/Bariga communities bubble despite economic downtown

It was a spectacular and electrifying atmosphere in the Somolu/Bariga area of Lagos as young and old were seen dressed in all sorts colourful attires in celebration of the Eid Fitri festival despite the biting economic conditions of the nation.

Flexing the round the communities to examine the situation revealed that the situation is not as bad as many believed as the crowd at the market places and stores around the area showed that the major marketplaces and fast foods outfits still enjoyed some level of patronage which erased the emptiness.

Popular fast food like Mr. Bigg, Tantalizers, Sweet Sensation, Tasty Fried Chicken, Chicken Republic, and some other eatery were not left out of the jamboree as people were seen thronging in shortly after the Eid-el-Fitri prayer to purchase one thing or the other.

Although, there were fewer beer parlours around that also welcomed some of their unrepentant customers back into their fold after so many days of empty sales.

However, there’s no doubt about the fact that many of the bars and popular joints will gradually regain their population as time goes on while some stores are still under locks and keys because of Ramadan.

The bartender in one of the popular Bars in the community, Dare Solomon, who shared his experience, revealed that one month of such a break was like a year noting that sales usually pick up two or three weeks after the long break.

He continued, “Although this is not my first time of experiencing such empty sales but anytime it comes, it comes with boredom, teeth-gnashing. It’s something we don’t have power over and so, we have to accept it the way it comes.” he noted
