The event, which took place at the prestigious new Somolu Local Government Administrative Complex, Somolu, Lagos, attracted notable personalities from different walks of life, served as a moment of reflection on the life, contributions and enduring legacy of the late philanthropist and respected Political icon, whose impact continues to resonate years after his demise.
The commemorative gathering, held in an atmosphere filled with prayers, spiritual reflections and tributes, featured a Ramadan lecture delivered by a renowned Islamic cleric who emphasised the importance of forgiveness, charity, humility and devotion to Allah, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
In his sermon, the cleric urged Muslims to use the sacred period to strengthen their relationship with God and emulate the virtues of kindness, generosity and compassion, which the late Alhaji Anwoju was widely known for during his lifetime.
He noted that remembering the dead through prayers, charity and acts of kindness remains one of the best ways to preserve their legacy, adding that such gestures continue to bring blessings to both the deceased and those they left behind.
Family members of the late Alhaji Sikiru Anwoju expressed deep appreciation to guests and dignitaries who came to honour their patriarch, describing the gathering as a testament to the love, respect and goodwill he earned while alive.
Speaking at the event, a representative of the family, Hon. Mrs Olufunke Fasilat Talabi, described her late father as a devoted Muslim who taught them to be humble, respectful, hardworking and move closer to Allah at all times. He was also a community builder and compassionate philanthropist who dedicated a significant part of his life to supporting people within and beyond his immediate environment.
“I thank God for my father’s life. When he was alive, he taught us all the values of being humble, respectful, hardworking, honest, and serving humanity, not leaving out moving closer to Allah. I pray to Allah to grant him Aljanah Fridaus,” the family representative said.
Several dignitaries who attended the event also paid glowing tributes to the late Alhaji Sikiru Anwoju, recalling his commitment to community development, support for religious activities and his generosity towards the less privileged.
Similarly, the Somolu LGA Chairman, a former Councillor and first Council Leader way back in the late 80’s, Hon. Ademola Olisa Adefalujo, described the late Alhaji Sikiru Anwoju as a well-informed and well-educated man, noting that his forthrightness cannot be overemphasised in both public office and as a family man, which resulted in being elected as the Treasurer of the Lagos AD.
He continued, “No doubt about the fact that late Alhaji Sikiru Anwoju of blessed memory was a well-informed, well-educated man, forthright in all senses. Don’t forget that when you’re forthright in politics, you’ll begin to have opposition, and he was able to manage the situation to the best of his knowledge”.
“Up till now, I’m still close to the family. Don’t be surprised that one of his daughters is the current commissioner of the National Population Commission, and they’re all doing fine. No doubt, Alhaji left a good legacy, and we can see the impact in the family and the society at large”. He echoed.
They described him as a man of honour and integrity whose legacy continues to inspire younger generations to pursue lives of service, humility and faith.
The Ramadan lecture also featured special prayers for the repose of his soul, as Islamic clerics led supplications seeking Allah’s mercy, forgiveness and eternal rest for the late community icon.
Guests were later hosted to refreshments while many continued to share fond memories of the late Alhaji Sikiru Anwoju, highlighting the enduring impact of his life and the respect he commanded among friends, associates and members of the community.

Late Alhaji Anwoju is survived by his beloved wife, Alhaja Atoke Selimot Anwoju and the children, who are: Olubunmi Ajose – Adeogun, the MD of Zaraah Nig. Enterprises; Olumide Anwoju, the GM of LASACO Assurance Plc, Olumuyiwa Anwoju; the MD of LENUWA Enterprises, Olubiyi Anwoju, Mrs Olusola Onabanwo, and Hon (Mrs) Olufunke Fazilat Talabi, Lagos State Internal Revenue Services.
Meanwhile, the 20th memorial anniversary celebration not only served as a solemn remembrance of a beloved figure but also reaffirmed the importance of preserving the values of generosity, faith and community service that defined the life of the late Alhaji Sikiru Anwoju.
