Fear grips residents as fire guts houses in Somolu

Residents of Ayoade street in Somolu local government area of the state were on Monday 7th June 2021 thrown into confusion, scampering for safety as fire gutted two buildings at No. 2 and 3 Ayoade simultaneously.

According to reliable sources, the fire outbreak was said to have started around 4 pm due to an electrical power surge shortly after the Ikeja Electrical Distribution Company (IKEDC) restored the power supply in the area.

Meanwhile, good Samaritans who were around when the fire broke out were seen breaking barriers to put the fire and as well save other houses from being affected.

Several calls put across the office of the firefighters to save the situation ended up with no positive result, leaving the residents and the victims at the mercy of the young men who eventually quenched the fire.

Speaking to one of the victims of the fire incident who claimed anonymity recounted his ordeal, describing the incident as unfortunate, shocking, and disheartening.

He stressed, “I was outside the building when I heard some people shouting fire. I took a few steps away from where I was standing and I saw smoke billowing from one of the buildings beside my house. I immediately join them to raise alarm to get the attention of others in order to save the situation”.

“And if the firefighters had arrived as expected, the destruction would have been minimal but we didn’t see them till the good Samaritans put out the fire”. he lamented

He, however, admonished the third tier of government to establish firefighters in the community to avert unnecessary loss of lives and properties that oftentimes prevailed after such occurrence.

Although, no life was lost in the incident but the fire has wreaked havoc before the firefighters arrived at the scene while the victims were being assisted to evacuate some of their valuables away from the scene.
