The Lagos state government has warned motorists against the use of defaced, faded, covered, altered or unauthorised vehicle number plates.
In a statement issued on Friday, Tobi Idowu, senior special assistant to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, on transport education and innovation, said the directive forms part of efforts to enforce compliance with existing transport laws.
Idowu also cautioned against the misuse of dealer number plates, noting that they are not meant for permanent or everyday use.
“This is to inform the general public and all road users that the use of defaced, faded, covered, altered, or unauthorized vehicle plate numbers is strictly prohibited,” the statement reads.
“Members of the public are also reminded that Dealer plate numbers are not for permanent or everyday use.
“Dealer plates are issued solely for vehicle test drives, inspection purposes, or for moving vehicles from ports or dealer premises, and must not be used for private or continuous operation of vehicles on public roads.”
The governor’s aide said the use of dealer plates outside approved purposes, as well as the use of defaced or obscured number plates, constitutes a violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018).
He advised motorists to ensure their vehicles carry properly issued, clearly visible and authorised number plates.
“The use of dealer plates outside these approved purposes, as well as the use of defaced or obscured plate numbers, constitutes a violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018),” he added.
“Henceforth, appropriate enforcement actions and penalties will be applied to individuals found in breach of these regulations by the relevant authorities.”
