The administration of the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, has commenced a comprehensive fumigation and deratization exercise across critical public facilities within the community, in a renewed effort to safeguard public health and promote environmental hygiene.
The coordinated exercise, spearheaded by the council’s Environmental Department, covers the Council Secretariat, Fire Station, Police Post, public primary and secondary schools, as well as Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across Somolu.
According to a statement from the council, the intervention is targeted at eliminating rodents and other disease-causing vectors, including mosquitoes and insects, that pose health risks to residents and staff working within government facilities.
Environmental health officers were seen carrying out systematic fumigation of offices, classrooms, health facilities, and surrounding premises to ensure a thorough and effective operation. The deratization component of the exercise specifically focuses on controlling and eradicating rats and other rodents known to spread communicable diseases.
Chairman Ashimi reaffirmed that the initiative forms part of his administration’s broader commitment to preventive healthcare, environmental safety, and improved sanitary conditions in public institutions.
“This exercise is not just routine; it is a deliberate preventive measure to protect our children in schools, our healthcare workers and patients in PHCs, as well as security personnel and council staff. A healthy environment is fundamental to community development,” the council boss stated.
He added that maintaining hygienic standards across government facilities remains a top priority, noting that proactive environmental management significantly reduces the risk of outbreaks of vector-borne and sanitation-related diseases.
Residents and stakeholders have commended the initiative, describing it as timely and necessary, particularly in view of increasing public health concerns associated with poor sanitation and rodent infestations.
The Environmental Department assured that the fumigation and deratization exercise would be sustained periodically to ensure long-term impact and to maintain a cleaner, healthier Somolu.
The latest intervention further reinforces the Ashimi-led administration’s resolve to build a safe, sanitary, and resilient community where public facilities remain conducive for learning, healthcare delivery, and administrative services.
