In a remarkable demonstration of community support and social welfare, more than 2,000 residents of the Somolu Local Government Area benefitted from the Renewed Hope Palliative Distribution held on Thursday, 27th November 2025.
The initiative, carried out as part of ongoing efforts to cushion the economic challenges faced by households, brought relief to widows, the elderly, artisans, vulnerable families, and low-income earners across the community.
The distribution exercise, which took place at the Somolu Local Government Secretariat, witnessed an impressive turnout as beneficiaries queued orderly to receive their food items. Each package contained essential food staples like Rice, Beans, and Garri aimed at supporting families during the current economic realities.
Speaking during the event, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people. He described the palliative programme as part of the local government’s alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind.
“We understand the pressures our people are facing, and it is our responsibility as a government to provide support where it is needed most,” the chairman said. “This intervention is only one of several measures we are putting in place to alleviate the burden on families and ensure that Somolu residents enjoy a better quality of life.”
Hon. Ashimi further emphasised that the distribution was conducted without political bias, noting that beneficiaries were selected from all wards, religious groups, and community clusters to ensure fairness and equity.
Community leaders, market women, youth representatives, and civil society groups were present to monitor the exercise and commended the transparent process adopted by the local government. A representative of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Alhaji Inuolajin Tella, applauded the initiative, describing it as “timely and impactful.”
Several beneficiaries could not hide their excitement as they left with their food packages. Mrs Balikis Oyelade, a widow from Ward C, expressed gratitude, saying the palliative would go a long way in supporting her household. Another beneficiary, Mr Sunday Adewunmi, thanked the chairman for “always prioritising the needs of the people.”
The Renewed Hope Palliative Distribution is expected to continue across various communities in Somolu in the coming weeks, as the local government intensifies efforts to cushion the effects of rising living costs.
With the successful distribution to over 2,000 residents, the initiative has been widely praised as a model for grassroots social welfare delivery, reinforcing the local government’s commitment to improving the well-being of its people.
