LAGOS- The incubent Somolu councillor representing Ward B, Hon. Abdul-Lateef Ashimi, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmanship primary election held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Lagos APC secretariat, Acme Road, Ikeja.Lagos.
The much-anticipated primary, which was conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner, saw Hon. Ashimi clinch the party’s ticket ahead of other aspirants vying to represent APC in the forthcoming Somolu Local Government elections. The exercise was witnessed by all the aspirants and their teeming supporters, with party officials, observers, and security agencies ensuring a smooth process throughout the day.
Ashimi’s emergence followed a series of consultations, grassroots engagements, and endorsements from key stakeholders across the local government. He garnered majority support from the party delegates, who turned out in large numbers to cast their votes in what many described as a free, fair, and credible primary.
In his acceptance speech, Ashimi thanked the leadership of the APC at both the state and local levels for providing a level playing ground, as well as the delegates and supporters who believed in his vision for Somolu.
“I am deeply humbled by the trust and confidence reposed in me. This victory is not just mine, it belongs to every progressive mind in Somolu. I am committed to delivering inclusive governance and building on the developmental strides of my Chairman, Hon. AbdulHamed Salawu ‘Dullar’ and our great party”. He said.
He also extended a hand of fellowship to other aspirants, urging them to join hands with him in unity to secure victory for the APC in the forthcoming local government elections.
Reacting to the outcome, party leaders praised the maturity and sportsmanship exhibited by all contestants, noting that the peaceful conduct of the primary reflected the strength and discipline of the APC in Lagos State.
With this victory, Hon. Ashimi is now set to fly the party’s flag as its chairmanship candidate in Somolu Local Government in the next council polls scheduled later in the year.
Many political observers believe Ashimi’s grassroots experience, especially from his tenure as a councillor in Ward B, places him in good stead to lead the local government towards greater development and people-oriented policies.
Meanwhile, as campaign activities for the general local government elections intensify, all eyes will be on Somolu as residents await the next phase of the democratic process.
