Speaking to Somolu Newspaper shortly after his appointment, elated Teluwo expressed deep gratitude to the Lagos State Government, sports stakeholders, and members of the association for the confidence reposed in him. He noted that the responsibility placed on his shoulders goes beyond the title, stressing that it is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to sports development and youth empowerment in Lagos State.
According to him, triathlon as a sport has enormous potential to groom disciplined, resilient, and globally competitive athletes if properly harnessed. He promised to prioritise capacity building, grassroots development, and structured competitions that will expose athletes to both national and international standards.
“One of our programmes is to have the first inter-local government competition. Lagos State has 20 local governments and 37 LCDA’s; we’re looking at how we can bring all 20 local governments and LCDA’s to participate in the competition”.
“Triathlon is a three-sport event in one. We’re talking about Track and field, distance race, short race, we’re talking about cycling, we’re talking about swimming, and all this will be through the public and private schools in the state, and not leaving out corporate bodies into the association. For example, we have the elite cycling family”.
“And talking about funding, it’s a known fact that government cannot do it alone, but I can assure you that we’re going to reach out to corporate bodies for support where and when necessary to achieve the target goal as planned,” Teluwo said.
The chairman further disclosed that his administration would focus on collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including the Lagos State Sports Commission, private sector partners, coaches, and athletes, to ensure holistic growth of the sport.
He added that talent identification at the grassroots level would be key to his vision, with plans to introduce development programmes across schools and communities.
Teluwo also emphasised the importance of discipline, transparency, and teamwork in achieving the association’s goals, assuring athletes and officials of an inclusive leadership style that welcomes ideas and constructive engagement.
Sports stakeholders have since welcomed his appointment, describing him as a passionate sports enthusiast with the capacity to drive innovation and progress within the triathlon community.
With his assumption of office, expectations are high that the Lagos State Triathlon Association will witness renewed energy, improved organisation, and greater visibility, further cementing Lagos State’s status as a leading hub for sports development in Nigeria.
