Culture and Tradition: Ashimi, Team Somolu join other dignitaries at the 2025 Eyo Festival “Adamu Orisa Play”

As part of sustained efforts to promote, preserve and project the rich cultural heritage of Lagos State, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, alongside members of Team Somolu, joined other eminent dignitaries at the 2025 edition of the Eyo Festival, popularly known as the “Adamu Orisa Play.”

The colourful cultural event, which took place at the historic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos, attracted traditional rulers, government functionaries, political leaders, cultural enthusiasts, tourists, and residents from across the state and beyond.

Hon. Ashimi, who is widely regarded as a strong advocate of culture and grassroots development, described the Eyo Festival as a timeless symbol of Lagos’ history, unity and identity. He noted that the annual celebration remains one of the most cherished cultural events in Nigeria, serving as a bridge between the past and present while strengthening communal bonds among Lagos indigenes.

The Somolu council boss commended the Lagos State Government and the festival organisers for sustaining the age-old tradition, adding that such cultural expressions play a vital role in educating younger generations about their roots while also boosting the state’s tourism and creative economy.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Ashimi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting cultural initiatives and traditional institutions within Somolu Local Government. According to him, culture and tradition remain powerful tools for social cohesion, moral values and community development.

The 2025 Eyo Festival featured the majestic procession of the Eyo masquerades, clad in flowing white robes and distinctive hats, as they danced through the arena amid chants, drumbeats and traditional music. The atmosphere was further enlivened by colourful displays, cultural performances and enthusiastic spectators who thronged TBS to witness the iconic celebration.

Members of Team Somolu, who accompanied the chairman, expressed pride in being part of the historic event, describing it as a unifying platform that showcases the enduring heritage of the Yoruba people and Lagos State in particular.

The Eyo Festival, traditionally held to commemorate significant occasions such as the ascension of an Oba or to honour distinguished personalities, has over the years evolved into a major cultural tourism attraction, drawing both local and international attention to Lagos.

The presence of Hon. Lateef Ashimi and other dignitaries at the 2025 Eyo Festival further underscored the collective commitment of leaders to preserving Nigeria’s cultural legacy while promoting unity, peace and pride in tradition.
