As part of efforts to promote accurate data management and ensure that every child’s birth is properly documented, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, has officially flagged off the Electronic Birth Registration (E-Birth Registration) initiative for newborns between 0 to 12 months within the local government area.
The official launch, held at the Somolu Local Government Secretariat, marked another significant milestone in the council’s commitment to improving digital governance and strengthening vital record systems. The programme, which aligns with both federal and state government policies on child registration, is designed to enhance efficient birth documentation, ensure inclusiveness, and promote child rights protection.
Hon. Ashimi, in his remarks, stated that the introduction of e-birth registration was part of his administration’s broader effort to digitise essential services and make governance more responsive to the needs of residents. He emphasised that the initiative would not only ensure accurate demographic records but also support effective planning in health, education, and social development sectors.
“Every child counts, and through this digital birth registration system, Somolu is ensuring that no child is left unrecognised. This effort will help us plan better for healthcare, education, and other developmental programs,” Ashimi declared.
The Council Chairman commended the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF for their collaboration in rolling out the E-Birth Registration scheme across the country. He expressed optimism that the project would strengthen the council’s database and provide children with a digital identity that can serve them throughout life.
Officials from the National Population Commission (NPC), health officers, community development representatives, and parents of newborns attended the event in large numbers. The council’s Health Department also used the opportunity to sensitise mothers on the importance of registering their babies early and keeping accurate health records.
The E-Birth Registration exercise is expected to be carried out across all primary healthcare centres in Somolu, ensuring easy access for residents in every ward. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this free registration opportunity to officially record their child’s birth.
Somolu Local Government, however, once again demonstrates its commitment to harnessing technology for efficient service delivery and inclusive community development with this innovative move.
