Former Somolu Leader of the House, Hon. Segun Fehintola honoured at service of songs

Late political icon and former Leader of the House in Somolu Local Government, Hon. Segun Owolabi Fehintola, who passed away on August 8th, 2025, was honoured in grand style on Thursday as prominent political stalwarts, family members, friends, and well-wishers gathered for a solemn Service of Songs in his memory.

The event, which took place at the New Somolu Local Government Administrative Complex, drew an impressive turnout of dignitaries, including current and past public office holders, party leaders, civil society representatives, and community leaders, all of whom came to pay their last respects to the revered statesman.

The service, with emotional tributes and musical renditions, reflected the impactful life of Hon. Fehintola, who was described by many as a visionary leader, a bridge-builder, and a dedicated servant of the people. His decades-long political career, particularly his time as Leader of the House in Somolu, was remembered for transparency, developmental advocacy, and grassroots empowerment.

Speaking at the event, the eldest son of the late political icon, Temitope Fehintola described his late father as loving and caring fatherly figure whose spirit, his integrity, legacy still lives. “I love my dad but God love him most. We’re here to give him the last respect. not that hes departed from us, his spirit, his integrity, his legacy still lives with us”. He stated.

In her farewell speech, the first daughter Hon. Fehintola; Miss Omotoyosi Fehintola described the relationship between her father and her siblings as divine, noting that her father was a caring, Supportive, discipline one who would always ensure things are in good shape.

She continued, “My father is indescribable. The relationship between my father and his children is divine. He’s was a caring, Supportive, and discipline. infact, I’m short of word, there’s no doubt about the fact that I will miss him so much”.

In the same vein, Oluwatobi Oluwasegun Fehintola in his farewell remarks poured encomium on his late father for being the embodiment of integrity, discipline, caring and a committed christian.

“There are so many things he stand for and one of such is being a disciplined man, caring and supportive and a committed christian”.

Fehintola Abisoye in his speech portrayed his father as a great person, a light and a builder of people stating that his legacy left behind will never die, it will lives on.

“I’m so luck to have him as a father. I see him as a great person, a light and builder of people. i will miss so many about him in the course to advice, mentorship, training. I pray that God forgive him his misdeed and grant him eternal rest. Rest on Dad!”. He opined.In a heartfelt tribute, the Chairman of the Ward E leaders, Hon. Babafemi Olowole (Demark), described the late Fehintola as “a committed and a guiding light whose wisdom shaped the path for many young politicians.” He praised his commitment to inclusive governance and his tireless efforts to improve the welfare of Somolu residents.

“Segun is somebody one can described as showparty man. He’s a man that has given much to the society and as you can see overwhelming number of people coming to give tribute. He’s an embodiment of sincerity, he compromise for nothing but the truth and that’s what Segun stand for”. He stated.Other political figures, including former lawmakers, party executives, and local council officials, took turns to recount their experiences working with Hon. Fehintola. Many described him as a man of integrity who left an indelible mark on the political landscape of Somolu and Lagos State at large.

His family, though visibly emotional, expressed gratitude to all who stood by them during this period of grief. His eldest son, Tunde Fehintola, speaking on behalf of the family, thanked the government and the people of Somolu for honouring his father’s memory. “He believed in service and people-oriented leadership. We’re proud that his efforts are being recognised today,” he said.

The ceremony also featured scripture readings, choral performances, and a short documentary on the life and achievements of Hon. Fehintola, which drew applause and tears in equal measure from attendees.

Guests were clad in customized Polo fabric made in his honour, and the event space was decorated in the late politician’s favourite colours. A commemorative brochure detailing his life, career milestones, and personal reflections from colleagues was also distributed.

The final burial rites continued over the weekend with a lying-in-state on Friday morning, followed by interment at a private cemetery in Lagos. A thanksgiving service was held on Sunday at the family’s place of worship at Humani Street, Somolu.

As Somolu prepares to bid farewell to one of its most influential sons, the legacy of Hon. Segun Owolabi Fehintola remains firmly etched in the hearts of those he served and inspired.
