In a deliberate effort to equip young minds with relevant digital skills, the Somolu Local Government in partnership with Tech Shepherd, a frontline technology and innovation hub, hosted a special summer training programme tagged “Summer Tech Spark” for pupils within the community.
The initiative, which commenced on 11th of August will coma to an end on 28th of August 2025, attracted enthusiastic participation from primary and mid-secondary school pupils across Somolu and its environs.
It focused on exposing children to essential Information and Communication Technology (ICT) knowledge, including computer literacy, Innovation and Design Thinking, Coding and programming, Computer Basics, AI for Kids, Field Trips and basic digital creativity.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, described the project as part of the council’s investment in the future of its children. He noted that education in the 21st century goes beyond traditional classroom learning, stressing the importance of early exposure to digital skills for competitiveness in a global economy.
“What we are doing with this Summer Tech Spark is to catch our children young, make them see the opportunities in technology, and build their confidence in using modern tools for problem-solving,” Ashimi said.
Convener of the programme and founder of Tech Shepherd Limited, Hon. Olukolade Muhammed, who also the former Special Adviser to the immediate past Chairman on ICT, expressed satisfaction with the turnout of the pupils.
He explained that the initiative was born out of the need to bridge the digital gap among young people in Somolu and create a platform where creativity meets innovation.
Parents who attended the opening event commended both the council chairman and Tech Shepherd Limited for their foresight. They noted that the exposure given to their wards would not only improve their academic performance but also open new career pathways in technology.
Meanwhile, Certificates of participation would awarded to the pupils, with outstanding participants recognition of their creativity and dedication.
The Summer Tech Spark adds to the growing list of educational empowerment programmes facilitated by the Somolu Local Government, reflecting a commitment to nurturing a generation of digitally savvy youths ready for tomorrow’s challenges.
