Five Nigerian chess prodigies jet out the country for glory

Lagos, Nigeria-Five young Nigerian chess players, each with an inspiring story of resilience, departed for the United States today, where they will compete in tournaments in Athens Georgia, New York City, and Harvard University billed for  March 29th, April 2nd, and April 4th respectively.

Their journey is more than a competition, it is a testament to triumph over adversity.

Among them is Ferdinand, a differently-abled child living with cerebral palsy. Once bullied in his community, the son of a poor fisherman from the world’s largest floating slum has found solace and recognition in chess, a game where his brilliance makes the world stand still.

Mary’s story is equally remarkable. Her family narrowly escaped death at the hands of Boko Haram terrorists, and she spent years in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Northern Nigeria. In a place where dreams often fade, hers endured.

Mabel, a radiant and determined young girl, was first discovered seven years ago in the slums of Ikorodu. She had no access to education but harbored a fierce passion for learning. Today, she is a formidable chess queen with aspirations of becoming a doctor.

Jamiu’s journey has been one of sheer resilience. Abandoned by his father and left homeless after witnessing his mother’s death, he has risen through the ranks to become one of the best chess players in Nigeria in his age category.

These young champions have defied the odds to stand on this global stage, representing countless other children who have been overlooked and underestimated.

As they set off on this journey, they carry not only their hopes but also the dreams of many others. Their mission is clear: to play with heart, walk with pride, and prove that their stories and their talents cannot be ignored.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the President of ChessinSlumAfrica, Mr. Tunde Onakoya has reached out for support from Nigerians at home and abroad while a GoFundMe account has been opened for the initiative.
