In an effort to make an impactful impression at the coming local government election scheduled for 24th July 2021, the Somolu People Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday held a peaceful primary election where the party presented consensus candidates ahead of the election.

The primary election, which had the official of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and the Somolu/Bariga electoral representatives in attendance, was well attended by the party faithful with decorum.

Speaking to Somolu Newspaper at the venue, the Somolu Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Hon. Niyi Osibemekun FCA, popularly known as Jackal, described the primary election as a very peaceful one with no form of violence owing to an effective youth wing.

He stressed further, “Our youth wing is very effective in the sense that we’ve always mandated our in various wards to have regular meetings with all the youth in the wards”.

So, because of this, all the youths get familiar with one another and when they’re familiar with one another, there’ll always be this bond and harmony they’ve shared over the years which makes it easy to choose among themselves who can be the councillors at various wards”.

“In most cases, even when there’s disagreement, that’s when the leaders come in and because of the discipline in the party, we hardly have any burden protesting or fighting against the choice of the leaders of the party”.

He continued, “We don’t force anybody on anybody, we always try to sit down to talk things out, and at the end of the day, we always reach the consensus candidates and it’s been very peaceful. Our party is so disciplined, the security officials are here, our internal democracy is fantastic especially in Somolu”.

The PDP scribe further stated that having completed the party’s primary election; the coast is clear for candidates to mobilize their supporters for the campaign while he also speaks about the free and fair election.

“Though I have challenged few of the official of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) that came and they kept promising that the election is going to be free and fair not disputing the fact that most like every other place, there can be bad eggs but LASIEC as an institution will defend everybody’s interest and protect everybody’s votes. I pray it happened as they’ve promised us”.

The former Somolu PDP chairmanship candidate stressed that in PDP, it is believed that the structure to win an election has to do with that structure that encompasses the interest of the electorate, the populace while he enjoined all the candidates to continue to work with the electorate, the community leaders and stakeholders in their various wards.

However, Jackal reiterated the party’s commitment towards supporting the candidates in ensuring they achieve their political goal of winning at their various wards.

“Immediately they become the candidates of the party, they now become the assets of the party. So, the party can’t throw away its assets because once they win, the glory is a double glory. They’ll happy that they win councillorship election and the party will also be happy that its name and reputation is sustained and maintained”.

“It’s the joy of the party they win and it’s the joy of the families they win and that’s why the party must support and will support them”. he concluded
