The programme, which attracted hundreds of elderly residents from across the council area, was organised to provide food items and other essential support aimed at easing the burden of the prevailing economic challenges facing vulnerable members of the community.
Addressing beneficiaries at the event, Ashimi described the monthly welfare package as a necessity rather than a privilege, stressing that caring for senior citizens remains one of the core priorities of his administration.
According to him, the initiative was introduced to cushion the effects of the current economic hardship on residents, particularly the elderly, many of whom rely on government intervention for their daily sustenance.
“The elderly have contributed immensely to the growth and development of our society. It is therefore our responsibility to ensure that they are not neglected. This programme is our modest way of showing appreciation for their sacrifices while supporting them with essential food items,” the council chairman said.
Ashimi noted that the continuity of the programme over the past ten months demonstrates his administration’s resolve to deliver people-oriented programmes capable of improving the quality of life of residents irrespective of their social status.
While urging the beneficiaries to continue supporting government initiatives, the council boss assured them that his administration would sustain policies and programmes designed to promote social welfare, inclusiveness and community development.
The chairman also used the occasion to caution residents against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains, canals and unauthorised locations, warning that such unhealthy practices pose serious environmental and public health risks.
He appealed to residents to embrace proper waste disposal habits and cooperate with environmental officials in maintaining a clean and healthy Somolu, adding that environmental sanitation exercise remains a collective responsibility.
Ashimi explained that a cleaner environment would not only prevent flooding during the rainy season but also reduce the spread of diseases associated with poor sanitation.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the council chairman for sustaining the monthly intervention despite the nation’s economic challenges, describing the initiative as timely and impactful.
Many of the elderly recipients commended Ashimi for demonstrating compassion and responsive leadership, noting that the food palliatives would go a long way in supporting their households.
The monthly ‘Ounje Arugbo’ programme has become one of the flagship social intervention initiatives of the Somolu Local Government, reflecting the council’s commitment to improving the welfare of senior citizens while promoting environmental responsibility among residents.
