In a vibrant display of unity and community spirit, the Somolu Central Carnival (SOCECAN) has officially kicked off its end-of-year celebrations with a grand street light-up ceremony along Okesuna Street in Somolu area of the state..
The light-up initiative, which has now become one of the most anticipated yearly traditions in the area, is part of SOCECAN’S commitment to fostering communal harmony and promoting a peaceful, vibrant environment during the festive season. This year’s edition features beautifully arranged decorative lights and creative displays that illuminate the stretch of Okesuna Street, instantly elevating the ambience and setting the tone for the activities lined up for December.
Speaking shortly after the decoration, the Public Relations Officer of the Group, Mr Wasiu Bodunrin, expressed his delight at the overwhelming support from residents and stakeholders. He described the annual street light-up as a symbol of hope, togetherness, and cultural pride within the community.
“Every year, we come together to brighten our street, not just with lights but with love, peace, and unity,” he said.
“This year’s celebration promises to be even more colourful as we have incorporated new ideas, decorations, and community-driven activities that will bring joy to both young and old.”
Ogunbiyi also commended the planning committee and volunteers for their dedication toward ensuring a smooth and impactful programme, emphasising that Soceccan remains committed to initiatives that promote social cohesion and youth engagement.
Residents who spoke at the event expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a refreshing gesture that enhances the beauty of their neighbourhood while strengthening bonds among community members. Many noted that the light-up has become a source of pride, attracting visitors from nearby streets and contributing to the safety and nightlife of the area.
The end-of-year celebrations, according to the organiser, will feature a series of exciting events, including cultural displays, children’s funfair, youth talent showcases, health awareness programmes, and the highly anticipated SOCECAN Awards Night, where outstanding contributors to community development will be honoured.
