A wave of excitement is sweeping through the Somolu sports community following the recent announcement of the completion timeline for the long-awaited Somolu Table Tennis Indoor Sports Complex. Both players and fans have welcomed the development with enthusiasm, viewing it as a significant boost for grassroots sports and local talent development in Somolu and Lagos as a whole.
The state-of-the-art complex, located in the heart of Somolu, is now in its final phase of construction. Local officials and contractors confirmed that the facility is expected to be completed and fully operational by the end of November 2025, just in time for the 2nd edition of the Somolu Newspaper Under-16 Table Tennis Championship.
The Somolu T’Tennis Complex has been under construction for the past few months and is part of the Local Government’s broader initiative to revitalise community-based sports infrastructure. Once completed, the facility will feature multiple competition-standard table tennis courts, modern training equipment, spectator stands, locker rooms, and a dedicated section for youth coaching.
Speaking during a site inspection tour a few days ago, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, expressed pride in the progress made so far.
“This complex is not just about sports – it’s about empowering our youth, creating opportunities, and building a healthier, more active community”. We are on track, and by December, Somolu will have one of the best table tennis facilities in Lagos”. He said.
Meanwhile, top local players and coaches have hailed the development as a “dream come true.” For many of them, the absence of a standard facility in the area has long hindered training routines and talent discovery.
Isa Sultan, a rising star from the Summer Table Tennis Academy, said the news has reenergized his goals.
“We’ve been training in an uncomfortable atmosphere and shared spaces. This new complex will give us the environment we need to compete when and where necessary”. Isa said.
Coach Ahmed Surmmer, who has mentored several young table tennis players from Somolu, believes the complex will change the narrative for the sport in the area.
“This is a golden opportunity for the next generation. With proper training and exposure, Somolu could produce future champions”. He added.
Fans, too, have taken to social media to express their joy, with hashtags like #SomoluTTennis and #TableTennisRevolution trending locally. Many are already anticipating the opening day events, which may include exhibition matches, junior competitions, and celebrity appearances.
However, with support from the Lagos State Sports Commission and private sponsors, the Somolu T’Tennis Indoor Sports Complex is also expected to host local tournaments and potentially serve as a training ground for the state’s table tennis team.
While the November completion date approaches, excitement continues to build. For the people of Somolu and the larger Lagos sporting community, the new complex represents more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a symbol of progress, passion, and potential.
