…vows strict enforcement against environmental violators
The Chairman Ashimi-led administration of the Somolu Local Government has successfully conducted a rapid, large-scale clean-up operation to clear an illegal waste deposit point on the Bajulaiye Canal Bridge connecting the Somolu and Bariga communities.
The swift operation executed earlier today successfully removed a hazardous accumulation of refuse that was obstructing the bridge’s roadside. This accumulation was creating an environmental blight and posing significant health risks to neighbouring residents.
Chairman Ashimi emphasised the administration’s non-negotiable commitment to environmental sanity and public health.
In a statement released today, he said: “This unauthorised dumping on the bridge is unacceptable. This is vital infrastructure intended to facilitate movement in the axis, not be used as a refuse bin.”
“This immediate clean-up is a clear signal: we are stepping up enforcement. Anyone found engaging in illegal waste disposal will be prosecuted to the full extent of our environmental laws,” he added.
The local government, through the Environmental Department led by the HOD: Sanitarian Hafeez Olarenwaju Ogunbekun and under the supervision of Kushimo Olaniyi, confirmed that the deposited waste has been properly evacuated and disposed of. This action marks the beginning of a renewed campaign to enforce sanitation compliance across the LGA, ensuring that all residents adhere to established waste management protocols.
The public is urged to cooperate with the local government by reporting any acts of environmental violation to the appropriate authorities.
