In just about few days to the 2025 Local Government Elections, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul-Hammed Salawu, ‘Dullar’, has called on all political actors, party loyalists, and residents to embrace peace, tolerance, and unity during the electioneering period.
Hon. ‘Dullar’ made this appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Shipeolu Campaign Office on Thursday. The gathering brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, community development representatives, youth leaders, and members of various political parties within the local government area.
The council boss emphasized the importance of conducting a violence-free election, stressing that the Somolu has built a reputation for political maturity and democratic advancement over the years. He urged all aspirants and supporters to put the interest of the community above personal ambitions.
“We must remember that peace is the bedrock of development. Elections will come and go, but Somolu remains our home. Let us not allow political rivalry to destroy the unity and harmony we’ve all worked hard to build,” he said.
Hon. ‘Dullar’, the outgoing Chairman, reiterated his commitment to leaving behind a legacy of peace and good governance. He expressed confidence in the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct credible, free, and fair elections.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Alade Police Station, CSP Jagunmolu Olatunji, who was also present, echoed the chairman’s call and warned against any act of political violence or thuggery. He stated that security agencies were fully prepared to maintain law and order before, during, and after the election.
Religious and traditional leaders at the event also pledged their support in sensitizing the people on the need to vote peacefully and avoid any form of provocation or incitement.
In his goodwill message, the APC party chairman in Somolu, Hon. Yomi Olubamido said the party was committed to running an issue-based campaign devoid of violence or hate speech. He, however, advised the opposition parties to also preach peace among their followers.
Similarly, representatives of the opposition parties in attendance, including PDP, Accord and Labour Party chieftains, commended the chairman for his inclusive governance and peaceful stance. They assured that their candidates would play by the rules and focus on campaign strategies that promote development.
As Somolu gears up for what is expected to be a highly competitive local council election, Hon. Salawu’s appeal for peace has been widely hailed as a timely and responsible move to safeguard the community’s democratic process and social stability.
