As workers across Nigeria celebrated the 2025 edition of International Workers’ Day, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government; Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu ‘Dullar’, has commended the resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment of Nigerian workers, especially those serving at the grassroots level.
In a goodwill message by the council boss who described workers as the engine room of government operations and development, noting that their contributions remain crucial to the socio-economic advancement of the council, Lagos State and the nation at large.
He continued, “Today is not just a public holiday; it is a moment of reflection and appreciation for the sacrifices and daily efforts of our workers. From street sweepers to administrative officers, from our teachers to health professionals – every hand contributes to building a better Somolu”. Hon. Salawu stated.
The council chairman, who has consistently prioritized staff welfare and human capital development since assuming office, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring a conducive working environment, prompt payment of salaries, regular capacity-building training, and reward systems for outstanding staff.
“I assure all our staff that this administration will continue to prioritize their welfare. A motivated workforce is essential to delivering quality governance and public services”. He added.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the local government (SLG), Mr. Dele Afolabi, lauded Hon. Salawu’s worker-friendly policies, describing him as one of the most proactive and compassionate local government chairmen in Lagos State.
Some council workers who spoke to our correspondent expressed gratitude for the recognition and urged the government at all levels to make workers’ welfare a top priority beyond ceremonial speeches.
International Workers’ Day, celebrated globally on May 1st, is dedicated to honoring the contributions of workers and advocating for their rights, fair wages, and improved working conditions.
