Meanwhile, the National Theatre is a premier performing arts center located in Iganmu, Surulere, Lagos built in 1976 to specifically host the Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977. This iconic building was designed and constructed by a Bulgarian construction company, Techno Company, and its design resembles a military hat with four entrances and exits.
Before now, the National Theatre had a 5,000-seat Main Hall with a collapsible stage and two cinema halls, all equipped with simultaneous translation facilities for up to eight languages. Over the years, it has been managed by various teams, with Sunday Enessi Ododo currently the Manager since 2020.
Meanwhile, in 2024, the theatre was renamed after Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka for his contributions to the literary and creative industry in Nigeria and Africa at large.
