The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu had expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration of Lagos State on the Covid-19 relief food items.
The Mayor said this when he was evaluating the performance of the relief food items in Somolu. He said the state meant well with the food items but the population of vulnerable Lagosians outnumbered the 200,000 food items.
According to the council helmsman, the movement restriction to reduce the spread of Coronavirus has made more Lagosians to be vulnerable and need more food items to sustain their households.
On the distribution of food items, the Mayor said the food items were shared freely to residents of Somolu irrespective of their religion, political affiliation, tribe or influence. He added that the residents were not even asked of any form of identity as Community Development Associations can easily identify their residents.
Moreover, the Mayor stated that despite the fact that CDAs, Somolu Muslim Community, Christian Association of Nigeria (Somolu Chapter), Traditional Religion Association, hearing and sight-impaired residents, physically challenged residents, Widows Association of Somolu, market men and women association were given the food item, other residents present at the venue were also given tickets to get the food items.
However, he added that the food items were not enough for the over 402,673 (Census 2006). He added that Somolu is a big community of over 85,000 families with an average of six members each. He also called on capable organizations and individuals to be their brothers’ keeping at this time of global movement restriction on health ground.
Recall that the food items from Lagos State government are a mirror of welfare food package for elderly citizens in Somolu where the elderly people in Somolu receive food items on monthly basis from the inception of the Local Government Mayor since July 2017. The over 1,500 monthly food items for elderly people in Somolu usually consist of rice, garri and beans. Yam was added to the food items during the March 2020 edition of the programme where the Mayor distributed the food items to elderly citizens at the respective residence due to the movement restriction order by the federal and state governments.
