The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is set to begin the recycling of plastic bottles gotten during the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon race 2020.
This was disclosed by the Executive Director of LAWMA Ibrahim Odumboni, who spoke to newsmen during the event at the Eko Atlantic. Ibrahim who was elated by the initiative expressed this by saying:
“What we are doing now is that once after this event, the bottles picked from the event will be recycled for other things that will be beneficial to the environment”.
“It takes 450 years before these bottles decay, if they are not properly taken care of, some of them will end up in our drinks, causing us problems like roadblocks and traffic movement in the state”
For the LAWMA boss, the effort of the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was a boost and the initiative would not have been achieved without his support.
“I want to appreciate the governor for allowing this initiative, bearing in mind that Lagos is an Island and a small city. What we are encouraging is having an attitude of Zero tolerance to waste”
“This initiative of gathering the bottles at the point of usage is going to go a long way in helping us keep and sustain our shopping for the waste plan as well as maintain a good plastic recycling”
“One way in which we can keep our space good and healthy is to manage the space within our environment so that generations to come will appreciate what we did”.
While LAWMA has employed the initiative of picking waste as dropped by members of the public during the event, it will be a welcomed idea if orientation is done to participants in subsequent editions to learn to use the waste bin.
