The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cycling as a safe, affordable, healthy, and environmentally sustainable mode of transportation while joining the global community in commemorating the 8th United Nations World Bicycle Day.
The event, which aimed at strengthening awareness on cyclist safety and responsible road use among all road users, also featured advocacy engagements, public enlightenment activities, and a symbolic cycling exercise
Declaring the programme open at the Sector Command in Ojodu, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, welcomed stakeholders, including members of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, cycling associations, FRSC personnel, and guests.
The Sector Commander called on cyclists to consistently utilise protective equipment such as helmets and reflective clothing, while adhering to all traffic signs and road safety guidelines.
He further noted that cycling is a viable solution to urban mobility challenges, emphasising its potential to reduce traffic congestion, lower environmental pollution, and encourage healthier lifestyles among citizens. He also advocated for the deliberate development of cycling-friendly infrastructure and urged young people to embrace cycling, particularly for short-distance commuting.
The celebration also featured a programme organised by the Gabriel Rotimi Aroge Empowerment Foundation at the International School, University of Lagos (ISL), where the Sector Commander, DCC Monday J. Otubu, was represented.
DCC Otubu emphasised the need to enhance safety for cyclists and other vulnerable road users through improved infrastructure and sustained public enlightenment.
A bicycle was formally presented to the Sector Commander by Mr Ashiru Al-Mahroof on behalf of the Gabriel Rotimi Aroge Empowerment Foundation, in recognition of his commitment to road safety advocacy in Lagos State. The Foundation also commended the FRSC Lagos Sector Command for its continued dedication to saving lives and property. He further expressed readiness to continue collaborating with the command on cycling education and other areas.
Key resolutions from the commemoration include intensified advocacy for dedicated cycling lanes across Lagos State, strengthened cycling education in schools, promotion of cycling-friendly policies for students and workers, and sustained public awareness campaigns on non-motorised transport safety.
The event reinforced the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in advancing safer, more sustainable road use practices across the state.
