Breaking News: APC backs Abiodun for Ogun East Senate bid amid rift with Gbenga Daniel

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its weight behind Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun as the party’s consensus candidate for the Ogun East senatorial seat, a decision that has deepened internal divisions and edged out incumbent lawmaker Gbenga Daniel.

The resolution was adopted at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Ogun East Senatorial District held on Monday in Ijebu-Ode. According to a party chieftain featured in a now-viral video, Abiodun’s endorsement was anchored on his governance record and extensive political experience.

“Governor Dapo was selected based on his performance and credibility. The belief is that he is well-positioned to represent Ogun East at the Senate,” the party member stated.

However, the development has sparked controversy following reports that Daniel was prevented from attending the crucial caucus meeting. Footage circulating online captured the moment his convoy was allegedly denied access to the Adeola Odutola Hall, where the meeting took place.

Reacting from outside the venue, the embattled senator dismissed the outcome of the gathering, insisting it lacked legitimacy.

“We arrived for the Ogun East APC caucus meeting but were unexpectedly denied entry. Whatever decisions are taken under such circumstances cannot stand,” Daniel told supporters.

The incident marks a fresh escalation in the political tension within the Ogun State chapter of the APC. Daniel, a former governor currently representing Ogun East in the Senate after his 2023 election victory, is seeking another term, while Abiodun is expected to conclude his tenure as governor in May 2027.

Compounding the situation is Daniel’s earlier suspension from the party in August 2025 over alleged anti-party conduct, linked to accusations that he supported an opposition candidate during a by-election.

Meanwhile, as of press time, the APC leadership has yet to issue an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the meeting or the reported exclusion of the sitting senator.
