It was an atmosphere of joy and admiration on Friday July 25, 2025, as residents, family members, friends, and political associates came together to celebrate a beloved community leader and the Chairman of Unity CDA, Somolu, Mr. Olanrewaju Odujoko with an early morning surprise birthday paranran in Somolu.
The colourful event, which took place at the celebrant:s resident was marked by traditional drumming, singing, and cultural fanfare – all aimed at honouring the celebrant.
Unaware of the elaborate plans, the Mr. Odujoko was lured out under the guise of a routine engagement, only to be met with a resounding ovation, musical procession, and a cultural paranran — a traditional Yoruba style of public celebration involving drums, chants, and a spontaneous parade to honour a respected figure.
Local entertainers and drummers led the parade, while residents and well-wishers danced through the streets, chanting praises of the celebrant, whose impact on the community — especially in areas such as youth empowerment, dispute resolution, and grassroots development — has earned him a place of reverence.
Speaking at the surprise bash, Dr. Bishop Emmanuel Abegunde described the honouree as “a selfless and tireless leader who has touched lives quietly without seeking the spotlight. This birthday celebration is our way of giving him his flowers while he is still alive”. He added,
Family members, including his wife and children, joined the celebratory train, beaming with pride. His eldest son noted, “My father is a man of the people, and I’m grateful that others can see and appreciate what we’ve known all our lives.”
The celebration climaxed with prayers for long life, good health, and continued impact. A birthday cake was cut, gifts were presented, and the crowd dispersed late into the evening, still basking in the euphoria of an event that captured the spirit of unity and appreciation.
The celebration not only reaffirmed the celebrant’s relevance in the community but also showcased how traditional Yoruba culture can be effectively woven into modern forms of honour and appreciation.
