WATERWAYS: Somolu LG Chairman ‘Dullar’ applauds Sanwo-Olu

At the Bariga Waterfront Jetty, also known as ‘Love Lagos,’ the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu ‘Dullar,’ through his Chief of Staff, Hon. Afolarin Olubiyi, lauded Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his commendable efforts in advancing water transportation in Lagos State. In an impactful keynote address, Hon. Olubiyi assured residents of Lagos State of the exceptional performance of the Lagos State Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Oluwaseun Oshiyemi.

Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu ‘Dullar’ expressed congratulations to the managing director of Lagos Ferry Services, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun, for the recent acquisition of an expanded fleet of larger ferries. This development, under the leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu, signifies a commitment to enhancing water transportation infrastructure across Lagos.

The event drew the active participation of residents, traders, community members, traditional and religious leaders, as well as youth representatives. Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun, the Managing Director of Lagos Ferry Services, shed light on the versatility of the Lagos State Cowry Card, enabling residents to seamlessly board trains, ferries, and buses operated by the Lagos State government.

He highlighted the availability of the Bariga waterfront jetty for commuters, announcing the commencement of a yuletide boat cruise from Bariga to Taqwa Bae starting December 16, 2023. Priced at a reasonable N5,000 per passenger, this cruise aims to provide an affordable and entertaining experience for those yearning for a boat cruise. Emphasizing the safety of water transportation, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun reassured residents that “traveling is safer on water.”

Highlighting the importance of water transportation amidst the rehabilitation of the Third-Mainland Bridge, he urged residents to take advantage of LAGFERRY boats at the Love Jetty in Ilaje-Bariga, emphasizing their safety, comfort, timeliness, and efficiency.

Notably, over 24 routes have been established within Lagos Waterways, making it the fastest and safest mode of transportation. Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun underscored the safety measures implemented, including compulsory life jacket usage, regular boat maintenance, and a personal accident insurance package for all passengers.

Mrs. Fadekemi Emmanuel, the representative of the Commissioner for Transportation, assured residents of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to an integrated transportation system. She highlighted LAGFERRY’s 50% discount on fares using the Lagos Cowry Card, ensuring affordability for commuters.

The University of Lagos, represented by its aide, praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for investing in water transportation and expressed readiness to sensitize students and staff on the benefits of embracing water transportation. The forum, attended by various stakeholders, demonstrated a collective effort to promote water transportation as an integral part of Lagos State’s efficient and integrated transportation system.
