Your Diet and Prostate Cancer Risk

DIET-ASSOCIATED GUT MOLECULES are associated with lethal prostate cancer. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic (USA) have demonstrated this link for the first time. While we need more research, the findings suggest that dietary interventions may lower men’s risk of aggressive types of prostate cancer.

Today we explore the provocative new research findings before pivoting to some ways men may be able to lower their chances of being found with, or dying from, prostate cancer.

Diet-related gut molecules and prostate cancer

Publishing in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers from the Cleveland Clinic (USA) showed that diet-associated molecules in the gut are associated with aggressive prostate cancer.

Dr. Nima Sharifi and colleagues analyzed data from patients previously enrolled in the US National Cancer Institute’s Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO ) Cancer Screening Trial.

Here are the research findings:

Men with higher levels of certain diet-associated molecules are more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer.

The scientists analyzed certain dietary nutrients and metabolites found in the patients’ blood before a prostate cancer diagnosis. They then compared the blood levels of these substances with those of men who later died of prostate cancer.

The men with high levels of a metabolite called phenylacetylglutamine were up to three times more likely to be found with lethal prostate cancer. So, what exactly is that substance? Phenylacetylglutamine is made when gut microbes break down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in many animal- and plant-based protein sources such as beans, meat, and soy.

Also, elevated levels of two nutrients in animal products (including egg yolks, meat, and high-fat dairy products) — betaine and choline — appeared to be associated with a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

If we confirm these results, we may someday use betaine, choline, and phenylacetylglutamine as biomarkers of aggressive prostate cancer. I can imagine using dietary interventions to modulate the levels of these substances to improve prostate cancer outcomes.

Lowering prostate cancer risk

Here are some ways that you may decrease your probability of getting prostate cancer:

  1. Eat red fruits and vegetables.
  2. Eat citrus.
  3. Pour another cup of coffee.
  4. Limit fat intake.
  5. If you smoke, try to stop.
  6. Make time for exercise.
