Flood Control: Ashimi, Adedeji, top officials inspect Somolu-Bariga canal, other affected areas

…urge Immediate State Action to Tackle Pressing Environmental Issues

In a proactive measure to ensure adequate flood control and safeguard lives and property, the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, alongside his counterpart from Bariga Local Council Development Area, Hon. Bukola Adedeji, led an official delegation to inspect canals linking both communities, schools, and public infrastructure, following yesterday’s heavy rainfall.

Addressing residents and community leaders during the joint inspection, both Council Chairmen assured the public of immediate, coordinated, and swift responses to lessen the impact of flooding on nearby houses.

They also pledged to urgently engage the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources to secure state-level intervention, aiming to prevent the massive blockage of wastewater as heavy seasonal rainfalls persist.

Accompanied by Executive members and Lawmakers, Chairman Ashimi also extended his assessment to the canal network linking the Akoka-Igbari channel down to the Yaba axis.

In addition to the waterways, several streets and ongoing road reconstruction projects were thoroughly evaluated to assess the level of damage caused by recent severe downpours.

Following the assessment, Chairman Ashimi declared a strict policy of zero tolerance for the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels and designated hotspots, charging the Super for Environment and the Head of Department-led Environmental team to put all hands on deck.
