At the meeting held on Thursday afternoon, the Supervisor for Agriculture, Youth and Social Services, Hon. Raheem Afeez (Aphixco), alongside the Special Adviser on Agriculture, Youth and Social Services, received executives and prominent members of the Somolu Farmers Association for discussions focused on improving agricultural productivity and strengthening the farmers’ body.
The interactive session provided a platform for farmers to present long-standing concerns affecting their association and agricultural activities within Somolu. Following deliberations, several key resolutions were reached to enhance the operations and welfare of farmers in the area.
Among the resolutions was the registration of the Somolu Farmers Association, with financial support provided by the council to facilitate a smooth and seamless registration process.
The council leadership also announced plans to introduce training and retraining programmes for farmers in order to equip them with modern agricultural knowledge, improved techniques, and best practices capable of boosting productivity and sustainability.
In addition, issues relating to the inauguration of new executives of the association were addressed, paving the way for the formal inauguration expected to take place soon.
To further promote agricultural activities and strengthen the local economy, the meeting also resolved to introduce a quarterly Farmers’ Market, which will serve as a platform for farmers to showcase and sell their produce directly to residents while encouraging the consumption of locally grown food.
The council equally assured farmers of increased patronage and institutional support to boost agricultural development and empower farmers within Somolu Local Government.
Meanwhile, in a significant milestone for the association, the Certificate of Registration of the Somolu Farmers Association was officially issued by the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, through the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Hon. Ayodele Coker.
The certificate was facilitated through the efforts of the Head of Department (HOD) of Agriculture, Mr Ajiboye Obafemi, in collaboration with the Supervisor and the Special Adviser on Agriculture.
The document was formally received by the Chairman of the Somolu Farmers Association, Mr Abiola, marking a new phase in the organisation and recognition of the farmers’ body.
In appreciation of the council’s support and commitment to addressing their challenges, members of the association presented assorted farm produce to the HOD of Agriculture, the Supervisor, and the Special Adviser as a gesture of gratitude.
The engagement is widely seen as a positive step toward strengthening agricultural development, improving farmers’ welfare, and promoting food security within Somolu and its environs.
