These “50 garlands” are not literal wreaths but a symbolic bouquet of commendations from residents, sports enthusiasts, sports administrators, coaches, and community leaders, all acknowledging the chairman’s extraordinary efforts in repositioning Bariga as a hub of grassroots sports excellence.
The mini stadium, before its rebirth, was typically a sandy playground for schools within the premises, with sports academies, football clubs, and other sports fraternities within and outside Bariga buzzing around the place to host their tournaments and sporting events, which usually take place on weekends and weekdays for Inter-House sports. And for a community bursting with athletic talent without a formidable sporting facility was a silent heartbreak.
Parents complained about the lack of safe spaces for children to train. Coaches struggled to mould young talents in substandard conditions. Many promising youths abandoned sports altogether.
It was against this backdrop that Hon. Bukonla Adedeji assumed office. And with a clear mandate to renew infrastructure and empower the youth, she made the stadium a priority.
What many now celebrate as a milestone began with deliberate planning. Under Adedeji’s leadership, the sandy and spacious playground was converted and underwent phased renovations, improved turf, upgraded seating, better lighting, functional training areas, and enhanced security.
Each stage of the upgrade sent a message: Bariga is ready for transformation. This intervention did more than improve a building; it restored dreams. Local players returned while coaches revived their training programs. Community football tournaments, once inconsistent, now flourish every weekend. Parents feel safer allowing their children into the facility. The mini-stadium has become a melting pot of talent, discipline, and aspiration.
The “50 garlands” are a collection of heartfelt sentiments, and they come from every corner of Bariga.
For Coach Dayo, a grassroots football trainer with over 20 years of experience, the change is profound:
“I have watched boys grow into men on this field. What Hon. Adedeji has done isn’t just renovation, it is restoration of hope. Our players can now dream again.”
Mrs Khadijat Olorunfemi, mother of a teenage footballer, believes the transformation is a pathway to opportunities: “My son wants to compete nationally one day. With this new stadium, he has a real chance. We salute the chairman for having the interest of our children at heart”.
Youth groups, too, have found a renewed sense of belonging. The stadium has turned into a safe space for recreation, mentorship, and skill development. For many, it is the biggest social equaliser the community has seen in recent years.
While the accolades pour in, Hon. Adedeji remains humble. For her, the project aligns with a broader mission of the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, creating an environment where the youth can thrive, achieve, and contribute meaningfully to society.
“Bariga belongs to all of us. If we invest in our youth, we invest in our future”. She often says.
Her administration’s focus on sports infrastructure reflects an understanding that athletics can transform lives, offering discipline, opportunity, and even economic prospects. Bariga Stadium today stands as more than a facility; it is a cultural marker, a landmark, a hub of dreams, and a testament to what purposeful leadership can achieve.
The “50 garlands” symbolise appreciation for a leader who listens, observes, and acts; for an administrator who sees sports not as leisure, but as empowerment; and for a chairman who understands that communities thrive when their youths are given wings.
Meanwhile, as the sun sets each day over the newly improved stadium, and children run across the pitch with laughter and determination, one thing becomes clear: Hon. Omope Bukonla Adedeji’s efforts will be felt for years to come. And in the story of that rebirth, the people have rightly placed their garlands on the woman who made it possible.
