In a heartwarming display of civic engagement and educational exposure, pupils of Gem Seed Nursery and Primary School, Akoka, Somolu, Lagos, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. AbdulHamed Salawu, popularly known as Dullar, on Tuesday, April 7, 2025.
The educational visit was part of a practical session on Leadership, during which the young learners had a first-hand opportunity to interact with a public officeholder and understand the structure and responsibilities of local governance.
The excited pupils, accompanied by their teachers and led by the school’s proprietress, Mrs. Mary Ohagbor, were warmly received at the council secretariat. The Chairman, Hon. Salawu, took time to engage with the children, answering their curious questions, sharing his leadership journey, and encouraging them to aspire to positions of responsibility in the future.
The Proprietress of Gem Seed, Mrs Mary Lotachukwu Ohagwasi while speaking during the visit, explained the motivation behind the trip stressing that the visit was priceless and would give the children to aspire to better their lives”.
Most time, most people have the wrong narrative about politics that politics is a dirty game and sincerely it’s not, it’s just the opinion of individuals”.
“As part of our classroom discussions on leadership, we thought it important to move beyond textbooks and let our pupils experience leadership by meeting a real-life leader who is making a difference in the community. And what better place than the Somolu Local Government and what better person than our very own Executive Chairman, who is not just a leader but a role model.”
In an inspiring interaction, Hon. Salawu ‘Dullar’ explained the roles of local government and emphasized the importance of education, discipline, and integrity in leadership. He commended the school for the initiative and urged the children to work hard in their studies, as tomorrow’s leaders are made today.
The pupils, visibly thrilled, expressed their admiration for the chairman and some confidently declared their interest in becoming politicians and community leaders in the future.
The visit ended with an award presentation to the council Chairman for his exemplary leadership, a group photograph, and a tour of the council building, leaving lasting impressions on the young minds.
This initiative underscores the importance of early civic education and the role of schools in nurturing future leaders who understand the value of service, responsibility, and community development.
