The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul-Hammed Salawu, popularly known as “Dullar,” has clarified his decision to finance the Itunu Awe Food Palliative Program, which was subsidized by 50% in collaboration with Lagos Inspire Food Outfit.
Speaking during the event, Dullar emphasized the pressing economic challenges facing residents and the need for government intervention at all levels.
“The people are desperately seeking relief from the government due to the current economic realities. As a responsible and responsive administration, we initiated this subsidized food program to make essential food items more affordable for our people,” he said.
In the same vein, one of the State Exco representing the Somolu constituency, Hon. Babatunde Olaoluwa described the initiative as a topnotch and first of its kind noting that the council chairman, Hon. AbdulHamed Salawu Dullar deserves kudos for having his people at heart.
He continued, “AbdulHamed Salawu Dullar has made a mark with the way the food expo is being organized and rancour-free. And Today, the chairman is bringing another dimension to cushion the effect of hunger in the community with a wide range of foodstuff to choose from, Dullar deserves kudos for having his people at heart”. He stated.
In the same vein, the councillor representing Ward B Bashua West, Hon. Abdul-Lateef Ashimi in his submission commended the council chairman for what he has been doing in the last few years, especially during Ramadan and other festive periods making provision for less privilege at an affordable rate.
“I must give kudos to the chairman for what he has been especially with the way he has transformed Somolu with life-changing programmes and not leaving out the welfare of his people”.
The items available at discounted rates included garri, beans, rice, eggs, yams, tomatoes, onions, vegetable oil, palm oil, noodles, meat, and frozen chicken, among others.
Dullar expressed satisfaction with the massive turnout, noting that all items were quickly purchased by residents of Somolu Local Government.
“We intentionally limited the beneficiaries to our local government by refraining from announcing the initiative on air. This way, we could ensure that our immediate community reaped the benefits,” he explained.
Regarding the sustainability of the program, the chairman highlighted that the initiative was primarily motivated by the ongoing Itunu Awe observance by Muslims and the Christian fasting season.
“The goal was to provide relief while also ensuring that the funds donated for food procurement were effectively utilized. It was a well-thought-out initiative, and we are convinced it was worth the effort,” he stated.
Dullar expressed joy at witnessing residents purchase essential food items at reduced prices, adding that the event was well-organized and hitch-free despite the large crowd.
