One of the experienced Skate coaches in the country, Kingsley Kedron has admonished the skaters in Lagos to stop the idea of holding on vehicles, tricycles, or any other moving objects while skating which he said was dangerous practice tarnishes the public image of the sport.
According to Coach Kedron who made this known on his Social Media platform described this unwholesome practice as not only dangerous that could lead to accidents and even fatalities but tarnishes the image of the sport noting that such actions misrepresent the sport’s core values.
“We urgently plead with all skaters to cease holding onto moving vehicles, tricycles, or any other moving objects while skating. This dangerous practice tarnishes the public image of the sport. Public feedback is discouraging, as many skaters engage in this risky behavior without wearing helmets, leading to accidents and even fatalities. Such actions misrepresent the sport’s core values, making it seem perilous”.
“Avoiding these unsafe practices, such as holding onto vehicles on the road, will greatly enhance the sport’s public perception. If you must skate on the road, always wear proper safety gear including a helmet, knee guards, elbow guards, and wrist guards”.
“If you cannot wear all the gear, ensure at least you wear a helmet. Skate independently, alongside the road without holding onto vehicles. This approach not only builds your endurance but also serves as effective training by letting you measure the distance you can cover”.
“For skaters distributing flyers, understand that we support your efforts to make a living through skating, especially given the current economic difficulties. However, prioritize your safety over financial gain. Charge your clients appropriately for your professional services and transportation to and from the location. This practice will help reduce the dangerous habit of holding onto vehicles”.
“Coaches, skate club owners, and associations, we urge you to continually discourage this deadly behavior that hampers the sport’s growth. By educating your athletes about safe practices, we can improve the sport’s reputation. Once the public no longer sees skaters engaging in reckless behavior on the roads, the sport’s value and appeal will increase significantly”.
Coach Kedron, however, admonished the skating community to present the sport in a way that’ll attracts public admiration and participation, rather than negative perceptions stressing that the public includes potential fans, company directors, and marketers, some of whom might consider sponsoring the sport but witnessing unsafe skating practices deters them from investing.
