The Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman who was represented by Mrs. Blessing Azorbo of the Legal Department, Ministry of Education, Abuja has charged the industry leaders to complement on the initiative of the Federal government through their contributions to research, structural development, scholarships for underprivileged students, capacity building, and graduate employment.
This was contained in his statement made during his speech at the 35th Convocation Ceremony of Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos held on Thursday 23rd November, 2023 at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Yaba, Lagos where he emphasized the need for partnership which will significantly augment the accomplishments facilitated by agencies like TETFUND, PTDF, and International Development Partners.
He continues, “We collectively recognize the pivotal role of Science and Technology education in national growth. As a primary driver, the Polytechnic sub-sector occupies a central position in our quest for technological development. The Federal government remains committed to supporting this sub-sector emphasizing a renewed focus on the 70-30 admission ratio favouring Science and Technology programme”.
“Simultaneously, we encourage regular curriculum reviews to infuse indigenous technology through local content, fostering harmonious relationships with host communities”.
“Though the federal government is aware of the various challenges confronting the Education sector. The issues which include accessibility, equity, funding teacher capacity building, institutional management technical and vocational education are being actively addressed. A comprehensive 4-year strategic plan is underway, serving as a road map for the sector’s development. A crucial step in this direction was the National Stakeholders Workshop on October 19, 2023, organized by the Federal Ministry of Education. The envisioned road map is poised to shape the future of education in our nation”. He stated.
Meanwhile, the Minister also urged the authorities of the various institutions to address social vices within the campuses, such as cultism, indecent dressing, and examination malpractices which he said was paramount adding that these issues threatened the aspiration of building world-class institutions and nurturing enduring professionals.
In his closing remarks, he congratulated the management and staff of the Yaba College of Technology for transforming the event into reality which marked a significant milestone in the history of the Institution as accomplished students embark on their journey to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress noting that this achievement would not have materialized without the unwavering dedication of various stakeholders.
