Finally, Obaseki formally dumps APC, keeps mute over political future

The embattle Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has finally formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) but kept mute over his next political moves.

Addressing journalists after meeting with the Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, in Abuja on Tuesday, Obaseki hinted that he resigned from APC after he held the meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide.

“I have officially resigned my membership of the All Progressives Congress after meeting with the Chief of Staff to President Buhari.

“We shall continue the battle to protect the interest of Edo people and sustain good governance in the state,” Obaseki wrote on his verified Twitter handle after the meeting.

The governor’s decision was coming four days after he was screened out and declared unfit to participate in APC guber primary election scheduled to take place on June 22 ahead of the September 19 governorship poll in Edo State.

It would be recalled that APC Screening Committee led by Jonathan Ayuba last Friday submitted its report to the party’s leadership after it screened Obaseki, who was seeking re-election, along with Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and four other aspirants.

The four other aspirants include Pius Odubu, Chris Ogiemwonyi, Osaro Obazee, and Matthew Iduoriyekemwen.

While Ize-Iyamu, Odubu and Obazee scaled through, Obaseki, Ogiemwonyi and Iduoriyekemwen were tagged ineligible.
