* Says the exercise will be a continuous one
As part of measures to cushion the undesirable effects of socio-economic lockdown occasioned by coronavirus pandemic, the executive chairman of Kosofe Local government, Hon. Afolabi Sofola yesterday distributed packs of relief materials to thousands of residents living in Anthony, Mende and Ojota in the first phase of his emergency food response palliative exercise.
Thousands of relief materials consisting of a pack of 5kg of rice, 5kg of beans, a packet of noodles and two hand sanitizers were distributed to the vulnerable, the aged and have-nots by the council boss who moved from street to street from Anthony Village to Ojota in the company of Secretary to the Local Government,, Hon. Abayomi Ologbonori; Head of Administration, MBS Arole, Chief of Staff, Hon. Fatai Gbadebo; Supervisor for Agric/social, Hon.Oyeyemi Oyetayo, Supervisor for Chieftaincy, Hon. Ola Odunfa and Supervisor for Revenue, Hon.Dare Osinowo,
In an interview with newsmen Hon. Sofola explained that the palliative exercise was being done to complement the efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Senator Adebayo Osinowo whom he commended for providing far-reaching relief packages to the masses.
He stated that his administration was very conscious of the hardships and sufferings confronting the residents of the area as a result of the lockdown, he said hence the purpose of reaching out to the residents most especially the vulnerable, widows, the elderly and the unemployed in order to forestall the lockdown degenerating into robbery, theft and fraudulent acts.
He assured that the relief materials distribution exercise would be a continuous one as the local government would reach out to the residents of Oworonsoki, Araromi/Ifako, Gbagada and Ogudu in the second stage of the programme which he promised would take place on Wednesday.
His words: “A lot of people live day in day out. It is the work they do in a day that they feed on. What do you want them to do. And they must feed. They’re hungry. The Local Government must go out and give them food
“What we are doing today is stage one. We are going to do stage two on Tuesday. It’s going to be a continuous exercise. So we are trying to provide food for the people because there’s no money. That’s the essence of today’s programme.”
Meanwhile some beneficiaries of the relief materials have lauded the humanitarian gestures of the council chairman. Those who spoke to us expressed great joy on receiving their packs.

In his remark, the CDC Chairman of Kosofe Local Government Area Hon. Segun Babatunde who was part of the team that accompanied the council chairman in the distribution exercise from Anthony to Ojota stated that the succour provided by the council chairman to the people was a welcome development in view of the excruciating lockdown which is taking its toll on the people.
He however, adviced residents to continue to abide with all preventive directives of Government and maintain Social distancing, personal hygiene and avoid mingling with cluster of people which include playing of football in the streets or fields.
