A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State Tuesday ordered the Nigerian Correctional Services, formerly called Nigerian Prison Service, to immediately release former Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu.
Kalu, who is a founder of Slok Holding, was sentenced to 12-year in prison following his conviction last December for allegedly looting N7.65 billion belonging to Abia State Government.
The Supreme Court, however, upturned his conviction on the ground that the High Court judge who tried the case lacked the jurisdiction as he had been promoted to the Court of Appeal at the time he convicted Kalu.
Justice Mohammad Liman, while ruling on Kalu’s application for his freedom moved by his counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, ordered that the former Abia State governor should be released accordingly.
The judge made the order after there was no opposition to Kalu’s application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
