Aafin Ilu set to host ‘Drumming for Peace’ campaign ahead of Osun Governorship election

In a bid to promote peace, unity and harmonious coexistence ahead of the forthcoming Osun State Governorship Election, Aafin Ilu (Palace of Drums) has unveiled plans to host a unique cultural initiative tagged “Drumming for Peace.”

The event, scheduled to be held in July at a yet-to-be-disclosed location in Osun State, is expected to bring together hundreds of drummers, cultural enthusiasts, community leaders, and peace advocates from across the state and beyond.

According to the organiser of the event, Prince Adewale Laoye, said the programme is designed to use the universal language of music and traditional drumming to spread messages of peace before, during and after the gubernatorial election. The initiative seeks to encourage residents, political stakeholders and supporters of various political parties to embrace tolerance and reject violence throughout the electoral process.

A promotional statement released by Aafin Ilu described the event as “a gathering of drummers to echo the message of peace through drums, before, during and after the Osun Governorship Election.”

The organisers noted that drumming has historically served as a powerful means of communication and social mobilisation within Yoruba culture and other African communities. They explained that the event would leverage this rich cultural heritage to foster understanding, dialogue and peaceful participation among citizens.

The programme is expected to feature performances by renowned traditional drummers, cultural displays, musical presentations and messages from notable personalities advocating peaceful elections. Community leaders and stakeholders are also expected to use the platform to sensitise residents on the importance of maintaining law and order during the electoral period.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the organisers stressed that peace remains a collective responsibility and urged residents to shun acts that could disrupt the democratic process.

The event’s slogan, “Peace has a rhythm, and together we can make it louder,” underscores the organisers’ commitment to promoting non-violence and encouraging citizens to become ambassadors of peace in their respective communities.

Meanwhile, as preparations gather momentum, Aafin Ilu has called on corporate organisations, philanthropists and well-meaning individuals to support the initiative through sponsorship and partnership, noting that collective efforts are needed to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process in Osun State.

Observers believe the programme will not only contribute to peacebuilding efforts but also showcase the rich cultural heritage of Osun State while reinforcing the role of traditional arts in promoting social cohesion and democratic values.
