Residents of Somolu have been plunged into darkness for the second consecutive day following a total power outage that has disrupted daily activities and heightened concerns across the community.
As of press time, electricity supply to homes, businesses, schools and health facilities within the area remains completely cut off, leaving residents to rely heavily on generators, rechargeable lamps and candles.
The prolonged blackout has affected major streets and neighbourhoods, worsening the already challenging cost of living due to rising fuel prices.
Traders and small-scale business owners lamented the situation, saying the outage has led to significant losses, especially for those who depend on electricity to preserve perishable goods and run equipment. Artisans, cybercafés and cold-room operators described the blackout as “crippling,” noting that productivity has dropped sharply since power went off.
Residents also expressed concern over security, as dark streets at night expose the community to potential criminal activities. Parents and students complained that the outage has disrupted studies, while some residents reported difficulties charging phones and accessing essential services.
Although the cause of the blackout has not been officially communicated, many residents are calling on the electricity distribution company and relevant authorities to urgently address the situation and restore power supply without further delay. They also appealed for clearer communication on the nature of the fault and the expected timeline for resolution.
Community leaders urged residents to remain calm while stressing the need for swift intervention to prevent further hardship. As the blackout enters its second day, hopes remain high that electricity will be restored soon to ease the growing discomfort and economic strain on the people of Somolu.
