The exercise, which commenced in the early hours of the day, involved clearing drainage channels, evacuating refuse, desilting blocked gutters, sweeping major roads, and removing illegal waste dumps in several communities within Somolu.
Speaking during the exercise, Ashimi stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment, noting that environmental sanitation remains one of the most effective ways of preventing disease outbreaks and promoting a healthier society. He urged residents to imbibe proper waste disposal habits and desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains and public spaces.
According to the council chairman, keeping Somolu clean is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of every resident. He assured that his administration would continue to strengthen environmental initiatives and collaborate with relevant government agencies to ensure that the local government remains one of the cleanest in Lagos State.
Ashimi also commended residents, community development associations, youth groups, market associations, and environmental health officers for their enthusiastic participation in the sanitation exercise, describing their support as vital to the success of the programme.
Residents who participated in the exercise applauded the chairman’s hands-on leadership and commitment to environmental sustainability, expressing optimism that the continuous sanitation campaign would significantly improve public health, beautify the community, and create a safer environment for all.
The monthly sanitation exercise forms part of the Somolu Local Government’s broader agenda to promote environmental sustainability, improve hygiene standards, and encourage civic responsibility among residents.
