Somolu/Bariga local governments in conjunction with Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board have flagged off a 4-day oral polio immunization programme targeted at children from 0-5 years of age to kick out the circulating poliovirus.
According to the Somolu council chairman, Hon. AbdulHamed Salawu ‘Dullar’ who stated that the vaccination exercise is to boost the immunity of the target group against the circulating poliovirus noting that during this campaign, Vitamin A supplement will be administered orally to children aged 6 months – 5years, while deworming tablet will also be given to children age 1year – 5years.
He adds, ‘It’s pertinent for mothers to know that the health of their children is not only important to them alone but to the society at large because they are the leaders of tomorrow, hence needs to be taken care of when and where necessary”.
He stated. In his submission, the Executive Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Alabi Kolade David hinted that any society that fails to put the health and welfare of its people into consideration is sitting on a time bomb noting that the government at all level are doing everything humanly possible to ensure that the children are safe and healthier at all time.
“I want to implore mothers in Somolu/Bariga to please avail themselves of the opportunity at their doorsteps, immunized their children against polio for a healthier and better future adding that the polio vaccine is safe, free, and effective”. He concluded.
Meanwhile, all children under 5 years will be screened for malnutrition using muac tape.
The nOPV2 is a novel oral poliomyelitis (polio) vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) which was developed to address the evolving risk of circulating poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) and being run across all communities of the LGAs/LCDAs of the state.
