…sympathises with residents
The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, had responded to the SOS call from the residents of Akoka over the over spillage threatening their health and environment.
Some residents of Sobande, St. Finbarr’s road and Aiyetoro area of Akoka under the aegis of Akoka Leaders of Thoughts has called on the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu and the Somolu Constituency 1 house of assembly member, Hon. Rotimi Olowo to save them from the issue of oil spillage in their area. The oil spillage which had damaged their borehole water, it is also learnt their buildings are getting weaker by the day as the oil spillage is leaving no soil untouched on Akoka boundary between Somolu and Bariga.
Arriving the area with the immediate past Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Gbolahan Bagostowe; immediate past Sole Administrator, Hon. Williams Lawanson; immediate past Executive Secretary, Engr. Abiodun Orekoya; the Executive Chairman expressed his displeasure at the issue of oil spillage as he said it may not be unrelated to a nearby filling station at Chemist bus stop in Akoka.
Hon. Rotimi Olowo, on his part, said he will raise the issue on the floor on Lagos State House of Assembly as a matter of urgent public importance. He said upon the result of water tests presented to him by residents of the affected area, the pH level of the water is far from purity as a result of underground contamination from the petroleum product.
Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, while expressing his displeasure about the oil spillage, he addressed it as a dangerous environmental problem. “This issue is a health and environmental hazard as its also affecting the primary school here and it’s endangering the pupils”, the Chairman said.
However, the multiple awards winking Mayor of Somolu made it known the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) will be invited to carry out adequate action against the filling station that may be the cause of the oil spillage and the residents will carried along. He also appreciates the effort of the Akoka Leaders of Thoughts for their pro-activeness by informing the government, “if you see something, say something”, the Mayor said.
